Arguments against pragmatism

Here’s an argument against pragmatism/utilitarianism that we get a lot:

“but but but

What if killing the weak really was the best way to improve society?

What if cutting the hands of thieves really was the best deterrent for theft?

would you do it then, YOU MONSTER???”

Um, yeah, and what if 5×5 really equals 10?

Except 5×5 doesn’t equal to 10.

And killing the weak isn’t the best way to improve society. Cutting the hands of thieves isn’t the best deterrent for theft.
